The Foundation

Decolonizing Possibilities. This site contributes to the discourse on disability from an indigenous perspective, an area which has not been investigated in any great detail. It explores the perceptions of disability and lived experiences of indigenous individuals with impairments.

Colonial contexts continue to shape the experiences of Indigenous students, especially in special education, even as educators work to respond to Indigenous perspectives. We apply a decolonizing critique to consider how colonialism affects special education programming, then survey Indigenous and decolonizing scholarship to (re)imagine how educators may use these ideas to start to address these concerns, give further reflection about ongoing colonization, acknowledge the lack of attention given to main models of disability, and use these ideas as a springboard for exploring more contextualized decolonizing possibilities.

We believe all women can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.
